Michel Barbaud
Pianiste, compositeur et pédagogue.
Michel Barbaud fait ses études au conservatoire de Marseille en classique et en jazz. Il joue beaucoup avec les musiciens de la scène marseillaise de la fin des années 1980, notamment Noël Ekwabi avec lequel il va participer à plusieurs formations de musique camerounaise et brésilienne. Il joue avec Leïla Percussion (Hakim Hamadouche, Bernard Abeille…). Concerts en Italie, Espagne, Suisse, Allemagne, France. C’est à cette période qu’il formera son premier trio et premier quintet avec Antoine Lisolo, Bernard Santacruz, Gérard Murphy et Bernard Camoin.
En juin 1991 il obtient une médaille d’or dans la classe de Guy Longnon. La même année il bénéficie d’une bourse du Ministère de la Culture pour aller étudier à Berklee College of Music de Boston. Il en sort diplômé en jazz composition en 1995. Il y étudie la composition et l’arrangement avec Herb Pomeroy, le piano avec Ray Santisi, l’improvisation avec Ed Tomasi, Hal Crook et Greg Hopkins. Les quatre années passées auprès de Herb Pomeroy ont une influence majeure dans l’évolution de sa musique. Entre 1992 et 1995 il crée sa propre formation, Blue Planet big band avec laquelle il se produit à Berklee et dans différents clubs de Boston. Une de ses compositions est choisie pour un album produit par Gary Burton, jouée par le Big Band de Herb Pomeroy. Il écrit aussi pour le premier grand orchestre de Guillermo Klein, The BigVan. Les musiciens pour lesquels il écrit : Christian Fabian, Sten Höstfalt, Seamus Blake, Dave Barraza, Marc Miralta, David Boato, Keichi Hashimoto, George Donchev, John Hazilla, Justin Mullens, , Rocco Zahariev, Jeff Ellwood, Shinobu Ishizaki, Erik Gibb, Dan Bosshardt, Pete Rende, Richard Nant, Bill Wint, Joe Cunningham, Kazumi Ikenaga, Lars Lindvall, Juan Cruz de Urquiza, Yorai Oron, Marc Miralta, Mercedes Rossy…
De retour en France à la fin des années 90, Il collabore avec son ami Pierre Gueyrard auteur compositeur, à la direction artistique et aux arrangements de deux de ses albums qui obtiendront ffff Télérama. Résidence et concerts soutenus par l’Institut Français de Skopje en Macédoine avec le guitariste et compositeur Tony Kitanovski. Concerts avec George Makinto au Trabendo Paris La Villette. Il crée au début des années 2000 le groupe Karwan avec Olivier Ker Ourio (harmonica), Gilles Andrieux (Saz et Tambûr), Jean-Yves Roucan (batterie) et Laurent Fradelizzi (contrebasse). Nombreux concerts en France. Il travaille aussi pour le théâtre avec la création musicale et performance pour la pièce « Cette Vieille Magie Noire » de Koffi Kwahulé, mise en scène Claude Bokhobza, avec Seb Brun et Yan Joussein à la batterie et Viviane Ginapé au chant. En octobre 2006 il accompagne Marianne James pour l’ouverture du Rhino Jazz Festival. De 2007 à 2009 il est le pianiste de The New Sisters avec Sophie Uvodic, Branda Della Valle, Véronique Bossa, Nicolas Villaume et Benjamen Farrugia.
En 2011 il crée le projet Liebeslied# qui associe piano et électronique avec Yann Joussein et Pierre Boscheron. Concerts en Ile de France. En 2012, concerts à Venise avec le trompettiste David Boato et son Eclectic Band, Lello Gnesutta (basse), Michele Polga (sax), Luca Colussi (batterie). Dés 2014 il crée le groupe Dans Les Cordes with a Beat of Electricity. Après plusieurs changements la formation est constituée de Xuan Lindenmeyer (contrebasse), Guillaume Lantonnet (batterie), Alice Picaud (violoncelle), Maria Zaharia (alto), Boris Lamerand et Antoine Delprat (violon). En 2015 à l’initiative du Pierre-François Roussillon le Directeur du Théâtre 71, Scène Nationale de Malakoff (92) Michel Barbaud coordonne la création du Cocktail Malakoff. Un big band de 15 musiciens pour lequel il écrit et il joue. Andy Emler, Régis Huby, Yves Rousseau, Clovis Labarrière et Yann Joussein écrivent aussi pour cet ensemble.
